SafeLives welcomes announcement of £17m to tackle violence against women and girls

5th July 2017

We welcome today’s announcement of £17 million awarded to the women’s sector from the government's Violence Against Women and Girls Transformation Fund. In particular we welcome the investment in perpetrator programmes; in order to end domestic abuse for good, we must stop asking “why doesn’t she leave?” and start asking “why doesn’t he stop?”.

We’re also pleased to see resources being made available for specialist domestic abuse support in health settings. Our Cry for Health research found that, when embedded in a hospital, an Idva can identify and support some of the most vulnerable victims much earlier.

We look forward to working with our partners, in order to move forward as a sector. Domestic abuse is not acceptable, not inevitable and together – we can make it stop.
